The Shoal Creek Trail currently extends 3.25 miles from Lady Bird Lake to 38th Street. Shoal Creek Conservancy is partnering with the City of Austin Public Works Department to create the Shoal Creek Trail: Vision to Action Plan, which will lay the groundwork for making major improvements to the Trail and extending it northward past Highway 183. The planning processes officially kicked off in May 2017. The demand for safe, alternative transportation options – and quiet places of respite – is rapidly increasing as Austin continues to grow. The Shoal Creek Trail will serve both as an alternative transportation corridor and a peaceful, revitalizing setting to experience the Creek’s wildlife, natural features, and historical landmarks. The expanded Trail will encourage green, human-powered transportation, provide a setting for outdoor family activities, and inspire Austinites to discover Shoal Creek’s hidden natural gems. Shoal Creek Conservancy will present the plan to relevant City of Austin boards and commissions and seek adoption of the plan by City Council as an amendment to the council-adopted 2014 Urban Trails Master Plan.

Plan of Action

Shoal Creek Conservancy is leading the creation of the Shoal Creek Trail: Vision to Action Plan that will guide the following efforts to transform the Trail:

  • Extend the Shoal Creek Trail from Lady Bird Lake to the Shoal Creek headwaters near Highway 183. When complete, the Trail will span over 10 miles and link destinations such as the Domain, Pickle Research Center, the University of Texas, and Downtown Austin. The new Trail will expand Austin’s urban trail network by connecting the Shoal Creek Trail to the Northern Walnut Creek Trail to the north and to the Butler Hike and Bike Trail and the regional Violet Crown Trail to the south.
  • Improve the existing Trail. The Plan will identify key locations for trail amenities such as mile markers, maps, drinking fountains, and restrooms, and identify key gaps in City of Austin trail improvement projects currently underway. The Plan will also provide a cohesive, community-developed vision for the Trail that will guide its overall look and feel and shape the design of priority projects.
  • Connect the Trail to the community. The improved Trail will create a green transportation coordinate that connects neighborhoods, schools and popular parks and major employment centers. It will provide opportunities for our kids and families to explore the natural world of Shoal Creek and connect people to the history of Austin, which can be told along the banks of the creek.

Meeting Information

The Community Advisory Group (CAG) and a Technical Advisory Group (TAG) will guide development of the Shoal Creek Trail: Vision to Action Plan. Each group will meet three times throughout the planning process. The TAG consists of representatives of City of Austin departments and divisions as well as other public entities with an interest in Shoal Creek. TAG members serve as subject matter experts and guide the creation of the plan by providing information and reviewing plan concepts and drafts. The CAG consists of representatives of neighborhood associations, major employers and nonprofit organization and other stakeholder groups with an interest in Shoal Creek and the trail.
