Guided by the vision set forth in the Shoal Creek Trail Plan, Shoal Creek Conservancy is working with the City of Austin to advocate for improvements to the Trail between W 24th Street and W 34th Streets.
In August 2023 the Austin Transportation and Public Works Department gathered public input on a proposed project to fill the main gaps along this stretch of the trail with the objective to improve trail connectivity, comfort, and safety conditions.
In March 2024, they published the results of their community engagement survey and their revised project plan which includes a 12-foot wide urban trail along the west side of N Lamar Blvd up to 31st Street as well as numerous intersection and traffic safety improvements.

In October 2024 the Austin Parks and Recreation Department began work to replace the existing 6-foot wide sidewalk on N Lamar Blvd with a 12-foot wide multi-use, shared use path from the Shoal Creek Blvd / N Lamar Blvd intersection south to the rock hop over Shoal Creek, which is just north of 24th Street (click the image below for a visual of the approximate trail location). In January 2025, this segment of the new urban trail is now open, and the additional trail improvements from 24th Street to 31st Street are in design.
In November 2025, the City began construction on the intersection and safety improvements between 29th-31st Street (click the map below for a closer look). These include a new paved trail with a buffer on the west side of Lamar Blvd, a new southbound left turn lane on Lamar Blvd at 29th Street, a new pedestrian crossing at Lamar Blvd on the north side of 31st Street, ADA accessible upgrades to sidewalks, and more. Construction is expected to last approximately one year and may involve some amount of sidewalk, trail and lane closures.
