Did you know that regardless of where you live, everyone lives in a watershed?

A watershed is an area of land that drains to a single body of water, such as a river, a creek or a lake. They provide us with drinking water, support habitats for plants and animals, and provide opportunities for recreation and the enjoyment of nature.

In Austin, the Shoal Creek Watershed needs your help. Shoal Creek spans 11 miles from downtown Austin all the way up to the Domain. It suffers from numerous and interconnected water-related challenges, including devastating flood events, poor water quality, erosion, loss of native habitat and reduced spring flow.

Our goal at the Shoal Creek Conservancy is to identify creative, cooperative solutions to address these challenges, so we have teamed up with the City of Austin Watershed Protection Department and The Meadows Center for Water and the Environment at Texas State University to launch the #Steward4Shoal campaign to raise awareness about the importance of this watershed and encourage local action.

Here are some ways you can be a part of the #Steward4Shoal movement:

  • Take a video or picture of yourself at Shoal Creek, along with a description about why the watershed is important to you and use the hashtag #Stewards4Shoal to document your post on any social media outlet.
  • Volunteer your time to help us create the first-ever Watershed Action Plan for Shoal Creek.
  • Adopt good stewardship practices by using water wisely, cleaning up after your pet, picking up litter in your area and always throw away your trash.

We all benefit from clean water – and we all have a role to play to keep our creeks, rivers, lakes and groundwater clean. Help us protect our watershed – visit www.ShoalCreekConservancy.org to find out how you can join us in protecting and restoring Shoal Creek!
