Shoal Creek Shopping Cart Corral Recap

July 31, 2023  | By Shoal Creek Conservancy

Inspired by the Austin Watershed Protection Department’s Trash in Creeks field study that found over 500 shopping carts throughout Austin’s creeks in early 2022, Shoal Creek Conservancy, the Watershed Protection Department (WPD), and Austin Resource Recovery (ARR) held the inaugural Shoal Creek Shopping Cart Corral to round up and remove as many shopping carts as possible from Shoal Creek!

On Saturday, July 29th, 56 volunteers, along with WPD and ARR staff, spread out over 6 locations along Shoal Creek between Lady Bird Lake to just south of the headwaters, and in just two hours collectively removed 48 shopping carts, 6 scooters, 111 bags of litter, and lots of large bulky items like desk chairs, pieces of wood, a lawn mower, and more! Removing shopping carts helps reduce future flooding and removing litter helps bring us closer to restoring Shoal Creek to a fishable, swimmable creek.

Visit SCC’s Facebook page to view more event photos, and find news coverage of the event at KXAN, KVUE before event and KVUE after event.

Huge thank you to all the volunteers, our cohosts, WPD and ARR, and our sponsors, H-E-B, Randalls, and Austin Subaru for their support!
