A couple of exciting urban trail connections that improve and extend the Shoal Creek Trail are under construction this fall and next spring!

Approximate location of the new urban trail along N Lamar Blvd north of 24th Street

In October the Austin Parks and Recreation Department began work to replace the existing 6-foot wide sidewalk on N Lamar Blvd with a 12-foot wide multi-use, shared use path from the Shoal Creek Blvd / N Lamar Blvd intersection south to the rock hop over Shoal Creek, which is just north of 24th Street (click the image to the right for a visual of the approximate trail location).

This urban trail is the initial phase of numerous improvements planned along 24th-34th Streets.

And, in response to overwhelmingly positive community and stakeholder feedback, Austin Transportation and Public Works announced that they are moving forward with the planned design on Rutland Drive, Longhorn Blvd, and Neils Thompson that extends the Shoal Creek Trail by 0.7 miles! Construction along Rutland Drive will begin late 2024 and construction on the urban trail will occur spring 2025.

This urban trail helps close the gap between the north end of the Shoal Creek Trail and the Red Line Trail, ultimately connecting to the Northern Walnut Creek Trail as part of the The Big Loop.
