Austin, Texas lies in the heart of Flash Flood Alley: one of the most flood-prone regions in North America.

We recently shared resources to reference in preparation for a potential flood. In the past, we’ve shared flood awareness and safety resources, which included some post-flood guidance, but the following information is specifically relevant for local post-flood recovery.

The City of Austin offers many resources for what to do before, during, and after a flood has occurred, especially if your home or yard is damaged. If you’ve experienced any damage from water, debris, or fallen tree limbs, the first course of action is to call 311. If you need any emergency repairs, review their overview for emergency repair permits.

Because home repairs are often extremely costly, the City offers Minor Home Repair grants up to $7,500 for repairs that pose an immediate threat to the occupant’s health and safety. These grants are available for homeowners whose gross annual income is at or below 80% Median Family Income. If any life-threatening repair to your home is needed after a flood, review their information for eligibility and the application process.

The City’s ATX Flood Safety page also links to other helpful resources, such as the EPA’s Flooded House Cleanup Guide and information regarding insurance claims for damaged homes and vehicles through the Texas Department of Insurance, though we sincerely hope you’ll never need to utilize any of these.
